What is VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. This is the name given to a set of technologies that allow a private network to be established over the Internet or any other private network. Traditionally, remote offices have been networked with leased lines. VPN technologies can replace this older system of private leased line networks.

The advantages of VPN are:

  • VPN technologies are cheaper than traditional leased line networks.
  • A suitably configured VPN will allow global access.
  • In the future, it is possible that VPN rather than ADSL will be the standard technology for telecommuters.

VPNs still has some limitations:

  • At present there are few recognised VPN standards or techniques, so products from manufacturer will not operate with another's products.
  • Currently, VPN are difficult to configure and use, although this may change.
  • VPN technologies are still expensive and the products in some cases unproven.
